God and Math: Back Together at Last

One recurring question is how do you connect God and Math? My answer is that there is no separation to connect. The difference is only a matter of philosophy and exposure.

Mathematics was heresy to early Christian philosophy.

Concepts like ‘0’ and Infinity were seen as contrary to the theological understanding of creation ex nihilo (creation out of nothing), which emphasized the divine act of bringing something into existence from nothingness.

By peeking into the void, mathematics was viewed as inquiring into God’s mind which was forbidden. By necessity Church law has become more accepting of mathematics, but ancient ideas endure regarding what a person can or should know.

In our daily conversations this appears to be a battle between Religion and Science, but Religion and Science are just human constructs to control human reasoning and secure safety on this unpredictable planet. Religion is not God nor is science Math.

“Mathematics is essential in the natural sciences …[ and is used ] extensively used for modeling phenomena, but the fundamental truths of mathematics are independent from any scientific experimentation. “

Religion uses God in much the same way as science uses math, as a pattern recognition tool to understand what is unknown. Throughout human history we’ve believed that if we could recognize the patterns in previous behaviors and actions, we can use that knowledge to predict future events AND possibly avoid them.

While many people tend to think of mathematics as something necessary to study science and tech, they don’t realize that the abstract reasoning that makes mathematics useful to study physical phenomena works with other mechanisms as well.

Math is a perfect location finder in all places that mimic nature. This nature includes our minds, but it’s up to us to discover and activate this key. Many have tried and failed because they put Math at odds with God. When it’s wiser to use the God and Math to beat the odds.
