The Power of Sound

Despite not possessing any musical talent of my own, music is a major part of how I came to be who I am. Music and rhyme are ancient teaching tools, but in high school, I realized that this was a tool that I could control and use.

I’m I a synesthete, have a Pavlovian response or suffering a medical condition? I don’t know, but the action of mathematics creates distinct a ‘melody’ in my mind. The movement of mathematics creates a movement of sound in my mind.

My mother was a part-time dj in the mid to late 70’s so I was born with a playlist running in my mind. Therefore the melodies of math didn’t seem unusual.

I can’t precisely say when I first heard them. I remember it as a gradual increase of sound. Like it was always there, but the volume increased over time.

Keep in mind that I have zero musical talent so these melodies aren’t real music in the way we usually hear music. I’m incapable of actualizing these sounds outside of my own mind, I usually describe it as a symphony because that’s the most accurate word I can find.

Symphony is derived from the Greek word συμφωνία (symphōnía), meaning “agreement or concord of sound”, and that’s what I mean by the melody of math. It flows like an agreement of sound or a grumpy preschool band. Depending on how clear it is to me.

Now, all this may be the result a medical condition.
